Why do cats just love cardboard boxes?
Cats just love boxes and will tend to squeeze their way into any box you leave around the house whether it be shoe boxes or any type of cardboard box. Whilst it is not proven why cats enjoy cardboard spaces so much, scientists have come up with a few theories as to why this may be.
The most common theory is that it is because it offers safety and a sense of security to cats away from the outside world which began from wild cats when they would stalk their prey.
A report by a veterinarian from The Netherlands recently researched the stress levels in cats in shelters. The reports showed that cats that were given empty boxes were calmer quicker and adapted to their new surroundings quicker than cats that didn’t.
Another theory is that they are trying to escape from unwanted attention. If cats don’t want to greet visitors, or have extra strokes from their owners they will run and hide away as a way of coping. Other people claim that cats like boxes and small areas due to the warmth of them as small areas are good insulators.
Professor Daniel Mills, one of Britain’s top experts in animal behaviour explained how cats like barriers; it creates a sense of security and independence. They feel safe and in control which cats like. Whether it is draught excluder, a row of socks or a box, they are all barriers which your cat will love.
When thinking of what type of cat bed to choose, you should take these theories into consideration. No matter what the reason is behind it, and which theory is correct, cats like high sided small areas. Research which bed is ideal for your cat and the area you are putting it. Whether it is a hooded cat bed or just a round high sided cat bed, it will give your cat an area where they can go to and feel secure.
We have certainly noted how our office cat Maisie just loves her cardboard Scratch Lounge, she obviously feels very safe and secure in there as its her favourite cat bed.
