German Shepherd falls for a goose

A German shepherd has been spared his life after falling in love with a goose. Rex the German shepherd had come to the shelter after being mistreated and chained up for years resulting in his being a very aggressive and angry dog. He had been passed on from a previous kennel who couldn’t tame him after his had bit almost all the workers. He was looking at being put down by injection after being one of the most aggressive dogs the kennel had ever seen.

It took two workers to feed Rex as one worker would need to distract him as the other would throw food into his enclosure. He would constantly bark at anyone or anything that walked past and would growl sticking his head through the enclosure bars to eat the wild rabbits.

However when Geraldine the goose first met Rex it was a completely different story. The dog that was once feared to have bitten a gooses head off at its first opportunity seems to have been tamed by the goose and in fact fallen in love. Both animals mellowed and are now inseparable, and even share Rex’s bed every night.
Staff at the shelter are shocked by how close to pair have become and how they have helped calm each other. The pair spends their days walking in the woods, licking each other’s heads and snuggling. They eat all their meals together and at bedtime Rex puts a protective leg over Geraldine.

“It’s so comical to see them because they love each other to bits,” said Sheila Brislin, who runs the Puriton Horse and Animal Rescue, near Bridgewater, Somerset. She just runs around alongside him all day long and whenever we take him for a walk in the woods she has to come too. I’ve been doing rescue work since 1997 and seen all kinds of strange animal behaviour, but I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Rex and Geraldine have a special bond that has essentially saved Rex’s life and whilst Rex is not ready for rehoming yet, he is becoming the lovely caring dog he was before he was abused. Staff can now walk him and feed him without his being aggressive towards them.
Whilst Rex, Geraldine and all the staff at the shelter are happy how Rex is getting on, Vera also a German shepherd and a former friend of Rex’s seems to be jealous of Geraldine and the shelter are giving her a lot o extra attention so she doesn’t feel left out. Geraldine goes to attack Vera is she goes anywhere near Rex and likes to make it known that Rex is hers.
