What is everyone’s opinion of Argos expanding their range of pet products?

Argos announced that whilst they have taken down a considerable number of pet products from their website, they are looking at expanding their range to include reptiles, small animals and birds in the very near future. A spokes person for Argos commented the following, “Argos is working with a third party organisation to extend its pet care range, which includes pet food for dogs and cats. Our partner has worked extensively with suppliers and wholesalers and the support we have received has been extremely encouraging.”

This comes only a couple of weeks after news broke out that Argos had been selling a consignment of grey market pet food found to have been bought from an online retailer. Understandably, the pet trade industry is not immensely pleased about this outbreak that will most probably affect a lot of people and their businesses.

However more importantly, the pet trade are very concerned that a company such as Argos that have zero experience in the pet industry are being allowed to sell products to customers without getting prior advise to their purchase. We offer a free phone help line so this gives every single customer the chance to talk through the products they are interested in and help them to choose the right product for them. When customers will use Argos, they will be buying products they only know about from text on the website.

This concerns the pet trade industry as a lot of people do need guidance, especially on what food they should feed their pets, training products and grooming. The fact that Argos have no knowledgable pet orientated sales staff means that consumers will just be buying a commodity and will invariably end up buying the wrong products is an issue that worries the independent pet trade.

If you feel that Argos selling pet products are detrimental to the pet industry let us know , we would love to hear your views?
